Restaurant Review:
That Place

Beach Road
Dubai

The first thing that got us about ‘That Place DxB’ was its name! In fact the number of times we went around in a conversational loop of ‘T: Where is our tasting? A: It’s at that place, T: Which place?’ was countless. That Place is a cozy, quirky and colorful little restaurant adjacent to the Dubai Canal in bustling Jumeirah that has started a sort of food trend of its own; putting all sorts of cool fillings into buns! Popular Italian, Indian, Arabic and Mexican dishes are stuffed into buns and are paired with dips of your choice, thus making for a unique and fun dining experience. The dips on offer include Swiss Gruyere Cheese dip, cream cheese, pesto tomato, cheddar cheese, ranch, chilli garlic tomato and sour cream and chives.

Here are the appetizers and buns we had:

  • Maggi Cheese Sticks: Maggi curry cheese sticks fried in batter
  • Parmesan Garlic Spicy Fries: Crispy fries with spices and garlic, sprinkled with Parmesan
  • Talk to me: Italian tomato sauce, spinach, Italian seasoning, feta cheese, mozzarella, parmesan cheese, black olives
  • The Tuk Shak: Tomato sauce, mozzarella, cheddar, Sheesh Tawook
  • Desi Dare: Mozzarella, desi mutton keema, green chilli, red onions sliced
  • Tango Chix: Salsa, cheddar, jalapeno with slow cooked chicken in Mexican spices and a special sauce

The Maggi cheese sticks were quite appetizing and different in comparison to the appetizers that we usually find in restaurants and one for the Maggi fans to try. As far as the buns go, we liked some more than others and would definitely recommend the Italian and Arabic flavors from the ones we had. Nevertheless, this is not to say that the other variants were not tasty. With respect to the quantity, one might assume that they’d need to eat a whole lot of buns to satisfy their hunger, however the buns are quite heavy what with the flavorsome fillings and toppings that they come with.

Dessert

For dessert, we had a mix of the ‘Dreams come true’ (Nutella spread, choco chips stuffed in sweet buns served with ice cream, caramelized walnuts and rich chocolate brownies) and the ‘Lotus crazy’ (Lotus paste stuffed in sweet buns served with ice cream that is filled with lotus and caramelized walnuts. We got a bun that was half filled with the former and the other half with the latter and garnished with goodies from both. Although this sounded and looked like a dream come true, it fell slightly short of expectations and we thought this might be because too many flavors mingled here.

At That Place, visitors can also pick up a board or card game and challenge their companions over a hearty meal. Overall, we liked the cozy, quirky restaurant and look forward to returning and trying out the other buns on the menu (like their Biryani bun or the butter chicken one that they’ve just introduced).
